In Ohio, a limited-term driver’s license is for temporary residents who have a valid legal presence in the U.S., such as a visa or work permit. To get one, you must apply for a standard driver’s license, pass the required vision and written tests, and present documents proving your legal status and the duration of your stay. The license will be valid for the period of your legal presence.

FAQ - Limited License

In Ohio, if you are under 21 you must take a driver’s education course.

  • Temporary Residents: People who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents but have a temporary legal status in the country. 
     
  • Valid Legal Presence: You must have documentation to prove your legal status. 
     
  • Duration of Stay: Your documentation, like an I-20 or DS-2019, must be issued for a duration exceeding one year to qualify for an Ohio license. 
     
  1. Gather Documents: Collect your visa application, employment authorization document, or other proof of legal presence and the duration of your stay. 
     
  2. Complete Application: Apply for a standard Ohio driver’s license or permit. 
     
  3. Pass Vision and Written Tests: You’ll need to pass these tests at a BMV testing center. 
     
  4. Get a TIPIC: Once you pass the tests, you will receive a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). 
     
  5. Schedule and Pass Road Test: Take your road test and surrender your TIPIC to get your limited-term license. 
     
  • Expiration: 
    The limited-term license is valid for the duration of your legal stay in the U.S. 
     
  • Real ID: 
    A limited-term license is generally not an acceptable form of identification for federal purposes, such as for TSA checkpoints. 
     
  • Undocumented Individuals: 
    Ohio does not issue driver’s licenses to individuals without legal immigration status.
